Little hearts

Harvey looked at the piles of files on his desk. He rubbed his face with his hands and took his coffee mug. Empty. Again. How many did he had already? He coudln't remember and, honnestly, couldn't care less. He had a lot more to worry about then that.

He shook his head then looked back at the open file in front of him. The pictures were horrific. That, was too much. He couldn't let it go. He couldn't just add it to a pile. Nobody could. Who would he ask to take care of that case? He couldn't ask anyone. Most of man would be driven mad. Besides, there was way too much work for the few man he had. That was without all the stress he'd got from Jimbo and his dumbass plans.

Gotham was a real mess. A real freak show. And he was the one suppose to keep it in order.

Bullock sighed, then picked up the phone and dialed Toby's number.

Toby dropped his pen and picked up his phone, still reading some paperwork. There was definitely too much work to do...

''Cavanaugh.''

He heard Toby's voice and could tell his son was tired.

-Hey Toby. I need to see you in my office as soon as you can. I know you already have a lot to do but I've got a new case and...well...I need you.

He stopped looking at his files and look toward the captain's office.

''Hey! Old man! Hmm...'' He paused, giving a quick look at the work he had left. ''Well, I guess I can't say no, right? When the captain ask, we gotta say yes,'' he laughed. ''Well, I'm coming then.''

He turned off his phone before going to Harvey's office.

He knocked two times on the door and opened it. ''I'm here.''

Harvey smiled when he saw his son. For a moment, he forgot about the stress he had. He was so proud of the man he had became.

-Toby!

He pointed a chair so Cavanaugh could sit down. He took a file and his smile disapeared. He looked tired, older.

-I'm warning you, this isn't pretty.

The file he gave Toby contained a lot of pictures. Babies' pictures. Those were usually cute. Pictures gave by the families. Then, on other pages, the shocking crime scene photos. Dead babies with a huge hole on their chest.

He nodded at Harvey, will getting to the chair. ''Hey dad!''

He looked at the file, unsure. Was it so bad for him to change that much?

''Well, there isn't that much case that is pretty in my unit, you know?'' He laughed a bit, trying to lighten the mood.

He opened it, looking at the pictures of all the babies. He raised a brow. Why babies? The pictures were all cute and all but... His face dropped when flip some pages, finally seeing the last pictures.

He just couldn't believe what he was seeing. How was it even possible...?

Harvey cleared his throat.

-The killer...The Killer stole...

How could he say that.

-He stole the heart of his victims...

His face turned white seeing the holes in those tiny bodies. He didn't knew how to react and even less what to say.

Who could do something like that? What in the world was happening?!

He tried to clean his mind, turning back to being a cop.

''Do...'' He paused, clearing his throat. ''Do we know anything about that?'' He closed the file and lifted it a little in front of him.

Harvey could easily understand his son's reaction. It was indeed horrible. Toby was trying to keep it professionnal but Harvey knew what he was thinking. What if it was his child?

-I want you to lead this investigation, Rookieboy. I know we all are exhausted but this...this is...there is no word to describe it.

He took his flask out of his desk. With a case like this one, coffee clearly wasn't enough.

-For the moment,the only lead we have is those photo. Try to find a link.

He took a sip.

-I know I'm asking a lot. But I need someone I can trust on this one.

He cleared his throat.

-You have 'till the end of the day to choose your squad.

When Cavanaugh had show her the file, the inspector Taylor nearly threw up on it. Who could be freak and cruel enough to do that? Not that Gotham was maniac's short. But there was something more than just mental illness in that. Even after nearly ten years in the forces, she had never seen something like that.

She had spent hours looking at the photos, studying the family profile. Nothing. She was about to stop for a coffee break when she saw it.

-CAVANAUGH! She called. Better come and see this!

Toby was trying to find a clue about all that shit. He had barely been able to assemble a little team. There were a lot a those he asked to simply said no... They were to throw up and didn't want to see all that... Some were just too lazy...

He pinched his nose, sighing. Harvey was definitely not easy on him. There was too much job to do and now... He had this case.

The inspector raised up his head from the files when he heard Taylor calling him.

- Yeah, I'm coming!

The inspector was cursing herself. How did she missed it.

-Look, Cavanaugh. On every photo there is that tinny stain. Looks like oil or something. It...it could be from the killer's thools or...or the crime scene!

She showed him on every photo they had so he could see it too.

-The lab could run test on those stains. It's worth a shot...right?
